    Plan

Define the cladding system, layout and details needed for a practical installation or replacement scope.

    Install

    FAQ

    External cladding — common questions

Does bushfire risk limit which cladding I can use?+

Yes, in a bushfire-prone area. Wall construction requirements tighten as the site's assessed bushfire attack level rises: lightweight walls move towards thicker fibre cement, steel sheet or masonry. That level is assessed for the site, so the choice of cladding should wait until it is known.

Why can cladding fail when the boards still look sound?+

Cladding sheds most rain but is not the whole weather barrier. Water that gets behind it is meant to be managed by the wall underlay or membrane, flashings, sealed penetrations and, in many systems, a ventilated drainage space. Failed flashings, unsealed openings or a missing membrane can let moisture reach the framing while the face of the cladding looks fine.

    Cladding Replacement and Rectification

What is the difference between cladding and render?+

Cladding is made of manufactured boards, sheets or panels fixed to the building frame or wall. Render is a cement-based coating applied wet to a masonry or other rigid backing and then finished. They manage water differently and need different repairs, so a wall problem should be identified as one or the other before a scope is written.

Do replacement cladding products need a building permit?+

For buildings with prohibited combustible cladding, such as aluminium composite panels with a polyethylene core, rendered expanded polystyrene or synthetic polymer timbers, Cladding Safety Victoria states that a building permit is required to approve any replacement product. Its suggested alternatives include fibre cement sheet and steel or aluminium panels.

What should a cladding quote spell out?+

A comparable quote names the cladding product and thickness, the underlay or membrane, flashings and trims, removal and disposal of old cladding, repairs to damaged framing or substrate, access such as scaffold, and the finish or painting. Where concealed conditions are unknown, it should say how extra work will be identified and priced.
