    The challenge

The homeowner initially requested repairs to deteriorated eaves. A broader review of the exterior identified additional areas requiring attention, including timber fascia and weatherboards, window timberwork, roof drainage components and exposed surfaces. The objective was to address the visible defects and coordinate a practical exterior maintenance programme rather than treat each item in isolation.

    ALTUA assessment

ALTUA assessed the condition of the eaves, adjoining timber elements and roof drainage. The upper gutter presented a particular access and cost challenge: full replacement would have involved disturbance of part of the tiled roof. A targeted repair and protective treatment was considered as an alternative to extensive removal, subject to the condition of the existing components.

    Our solution

The work combined repairs to eaves and fascia, replacement of a downpipe, restoration of affected weatherboards and window timber elements, and exterior preparation and painting. Localised treatment and protective coating were applied to the relevant gutter and roof-valley areas as part of the roof drainage maintenance scope. The repair approach aimed to retain serviceable components where practical.

    Works completed

    • Eaves and fascia repairs
    • Replacement of a downpipe
    • Weatherboard and window timber restoration
    • Exterior surface preparation and painting
    • Localised gutter treatment and protective coating
    • Roof valley maintenance and protective treatment

    Project outcome

The project developed from an isolated eaves repair request into a coordinated exterior restoration. Timber elements, painted surfaces and selected drainage components were addressed within one scope, reducing the need to approach each defect as a separate job. The photographs document the original condition, works in progress and the finished exterior.

Exterior Repairs & Roof Drainage — Technical Considerations

Practical information about coordinated exterior maintenance and repair decisions.

Why should damaged eaves and fascia be assessed together?

Eaves and fascia form adjoining parts of the roof-edge assembly. Deterioration in one area may coincide with defects in adjacent timber or drainage details. Assessing them together helps define the repair scope before repainting.

Can a deteriorated gutter always be repaired instead of replaced?

No. A localised repair may be practical when the existing gutter remains suitable, but severe corrosion, failed joints or inadequate drainage can require replacement. The condition and access requirements must be assessed on site.

Why repair exterior timber before painting?

Paint is a finishing and protective layer, not a substitute for repairing damaged timber. Deteriorated sections and preparation requirements should be addressed before priming and finishing to achieve an appropriate substrate.
