Start with the problem, then determine the right repair.
A sudden leak, storm-related damage or another unexpected roof problem can quickly affect more than the visible area. We review the information available, consider the likely cause and determine what repair approach makes sense for the property.
Clear information helps us respond to the right problem.

Repair
Where the work fits our scope, organise the agreed repair based on the condition, access and work required.
When a roof problem can’t simply be left for later.
Unexpected leaks and roof damage can quickly affect other parts of the property. Contact ALTUA with the details of the problem and, where possible, photos or videos. We’ll review the situation, identify the practical next step and arrange suitable repair work based on the condition, access and information available.
Fix the cause, not just the immediate symptom.
An urgent roof problem may start with a visible leak or damaged area, while the actual cause sits elsewhere in the roofing system. Where required, we assess the surrounding roof details so the repair addresses the problem properly.
Emergency roof repairs — common questions
Who should I call first after storm damage to the roof?+
Call Triple Zero (000) if anyone is in danger. For storm damage to a roof or a tree on the home, VICSES takes calls on 132 500 and may carry out emergency temporary repairs. For minor leaks and superficial damage VICSES advises contacting a tradesperson.
Is it safe to climb onto the roof to check damage?+
No. Falls are the main cause of death and injury in roof work, and Safe Work Australia advises treating all roofs as fragile until a competent person confirms otherwise. Check from the ground, take photos and avoid skylights and old sheeting.
What is a make-safe, and how is it different from a repair?+
A make-safe is temporary protection, such as a tarp or cover, that stops further water entering. A repair restores the roof. Photograph the damage first and check your policy, as insurers generally expect reasonable steps to limit further damage.
What if the ceiling is sagging or bulging with water?+
Keep people and belongings out from beneath it and avoid using lights or power points in that area until an electrician has checked them. A ceiling holding water can fail suddenly, so treat it as urgent.
What information helps with an urgent roof enquiry?+
Photos or video of the damage, the property address, when it started, the roof type and how access works. Clear information lets the first response be based on what is actually damaged.
